Braces are dental tools that treat problems with your teeth such as crowding, crooked teeth, and out-of-alignment teeth. Many teenagers get braces, but adults also get them. Braces slowly straighten and align your teeth so that you have a normal bite as you wear them. Dentists commonly use braces to straighten teeth.
Fixed braces, retainers, and custom-made removable appliances that cover the outside of the teeth and hold them in position are some ways by which your crooked teeth or misaligned bites whether underbite or overbite can be fixed.

Let’s find out how these braces work?

Several factors must work together to bring your teeth into normal alignment with regular braces.

THE COMPONENTS

To straighten your teeth with traditional braces, we use numerous components and tools:

  1. The archwire is a thin metal wire that passes between the brackets to push your teeth into their proper alignment gently.
  2. The elastic ties, also known as elastic rings, ligature elastics, are used to hold the archwire in place. Each time you visit your Dentist, you can change your tie’s colors.
  3. Rubber bands are used in cases where you need a little more pressure to straighten and align your teeth. Bands connect brackets on upper teeth with brackets on lower teeth.
  4. Other tools, such as tubes, hooks, loops, springs, steel ties, and bite correctors, are sometimes used in special cases. If these are necessary for your orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist will ensure you understand exactly what’s happening at every step of the process.

THE PROCESS

Braces apply constant, gentle pressure against your teeth to encourage your bones to adapt to your new alignment and eventually support it for the rest of your life.

Your teeth are slowly moved into their new positions as progress is made to thicker archwires and brackets are tightened to apply additional pressure.

After the teeth have moved into the correct position, you are given retainers so that the bone and tissue around the teeth and jaws can fully adapt to the new positions. When retainers are worn properly, the new and improved smile will last a lifetime!

THE TIMELINE

Once your traditional braces are in place, the bone remodeling process usually takes some days to begin. As your teeth and jaw acclimate to adjust tension inside your mouth, you might encounter some distress during the initial days or even weeks. It will take a few weeks to start remodeling the bone once the procedure begins, and it will normally take 1-3 years to fully stabilize the new bone and stabilize your new smile.

Types of Braces

The most common method for straightening teeth and correcting misaligned bites in youngsters is to use braces. Now, the braces are not just the shiny mouthful of metal they used to be. There are many other forms of braces available today.

Your dentist will create a custom appliance for you if braces are the best option. In braces, bands, wires, and other fixed or removable correction equipment may be used. Not every approach works for everyone.

Metal / Traditional braces:

Metal braces are the most common type. A bracket is fixed to the front of each tooth; the bands wrap around the molar teeth and flexible wires, called archwires, connect them. Some braces use rubber bands or metal ties to connect the brackets to the wire. These bands apply more pressure to your teeth to help them straighten and align.

Ceramic braces:

Ceramic braces are similar in size and form to traditional metal braces, but they are made of highly aesthetic material that blends in with the natural color of the teeth, making them less noticeable.

Lingual braces:

The lingual braces are metal braces that are attached to the inside of the teeth and cannot be seen from the outside. They are similar to traditional braces in that they are composed of metal.

Clear aligners:

You might hear them referred to as invisible braces. These are a set of clear plastic trays that fit over your teeth like a glove. They apply gentle pressure to your teeth to shift them into the proper positions and straighten your smile. You can take out the aligners to eat, brush and floss, but they must be worn for at least 22 hours each day to be effective. To keep the aligners in place, the Orthodontist may apply tooth-colored attachments to your teeth.
